KCDC evaluated 11 medical institutions that participated in the project to establish infectious disease hospitals in all regions in order to strengthen the infectious disease response system. Based on the evaluation, Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital and Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital were selected.

The two newly selected medical institutions, along with Chosun Universtiy Hospital selected in August 2017, will provide (1) diagnosis, treatment, and testing of infectious disease patients; (2) education and training of public and private sector medical institutions’ infectious disease response workforce; and (3) treatment of severe patients and supporting assessment and screening of patient severity in their respective region.

In order to protect health of the elderly, who are vulnerable to infectious diseases such as pneumonia, and to prevent COVID-19 induced severe pneumonia, free pneumococcal infection vaccination for the elderly, currently only available at public health centers, will be available at designated private hospitals and clinics starting 22 June.

For safe vaccination process, an appointment should be made in advance and preventive measures such as mask wearing should be practiced when visiting a clinic or hospital.

KCDC advised medical institutions to make sure to schedule vaccinations by appointment, to separate the vaccination room and regular consultation room, place hand sanitizers at the entrance, and follow other safety measures.

KCDC provided guidance on precautions regarding restaurants and dining facilities with presumed high risk of infection transmission due to the nature of such facilities creating a crowded environment where it is difficult to keep a facemask on.

An analysis of current data on outbreaks related to restaurants and bars since May show that transmissions occur not only to a party member but also to staff and other customers.

- Epidemiological investigation on the teacher of Icheon Jeil High School revealed that the confirmed case visited a bar in Gangnam-gu (Daedong House, Gangnam-gu Bongeunsa-ro) that was also visited by confirmed cases from Principle School of English around the same time (5 June, 22:00-24:00) and further transmissions continue*.

* Among the 7 people that were eating near the two groups, 6 people tested positive.

- Because of the nature of restaurants and bars involving an environment where people are eating and having conversations together without wearing a mask in a crowded and confined environment, KCDC stressed the need to postpone or reduce non-essential social gathering and dining out plans, and refrain from visiting dining facilities if having symptoms.

KCDC noted that COVID-19 transmissions are occurring through various channels including religious small group meetings, club meetings, and door-to-door sales and expressed concern that a massive nationwide wave may occur if the transmissions continue. KCDC advised people to take particular precautions during the weekend.

In particular, since religious gatherings tend to involve a crowded environment where conversations, singing, and eating take place, making it vulnerable to droplet-induced transmission, non-face-to-face methods are encouraged and canceling or postponing small group meetings is recommended.

- If on-site worship service is held, such facilities need to reduce the number of participants to ensure that participants keep proper distance from each other, check participants for fever and other symptoms, ensure hand washing and mask wearing, and make sure not to provide meals or engage in activities that release respiratory droplets in the air (such as singing, chanting, and shouting).

With the rise in the number of elderly cases, the number of patients with severe symptoms is also increasing. The elderly need to take particular precautions.

- The elderly are advised not to visit enclosed indoor spaces without windows or that are poorly ventilated and avoid going out or meeting other people as much as possible.

- If such an occasion is unavoidable, activities such as eating and singing should be refrained. Masks should be worn and frequent hand washing or sanitizing should be practiced.

- KCDC advises elderly people to take good care of any chronic medical conditions they have by making sure not to miss getting necessary medical care (utilizing over-the-phone consultations if necessary), take medications, and wearing a facemask when visiting a clinic or hospital.

- Regular exercise is also important, including light home exercises and stretching as well as taking a walk regularly in places and times with less foot traffic outside.

COVID-19 outbreaks can occur in any confined, crowded, and close-contact environment. Therefore, gatherings such as social club meetings and religious small group meetings should be postponed and nightlife establishments, bars, karaoke, and PC cafes should be avoided. In daily life, hand washing, mask wearing, and 2 meter distancing should be practiced.
