15 June |
Characteristics |
• (Risky activities) Singing along and other activities that produce a lot of respiratory droplets, long gathering time, poorly ventilated confined space • (Risky location) Direct sales promotion halls • (Further transmission) Rapid transmission in community through religious facilities, workplaces, after-school academies, public venues (restaurants, indoor sports/fitness facilities) |
• (Risky activities) Frequent close-contact small gatherings, long event time including product demo or information sharing • (Risky location) Direct sales company location • (Further transmission) Rapid and widespread transmission to multiple regions through small gatherings among friends/acquaintances, public venues (hair salons, restaurants, saunas, etc), healthcare institutions |
Lessons learned |
① Follow everyday infection prevention measures including mask wearing ② If having suspected symptoms, do not go out or attend gatherings; go to a screening clinic ③ Avoid non-urgent, non-essential social gatherings |
○ Findings from epidemiological investigation on these clusters include:
- Many stayed in a confined space for a long period of time for product demo, having frequent small gatherings for information sharing, and in some cases, participating in mass singing — all with no or improper mask wearing (wearing incorrectly or taking off during conversation or meal)
- Also, some visited public venues (such as sauna, religious facilities, restaurants, hair salons) and healthcare institutions even though they had symptoms, leading to further rapid transmissions.
○ To prevent infection and transmission in the community through direct selling:
- Middle aged and elderly people are asked to avoid attending information sessions or promotional events related to door-to-door sales agencies.
- They should also cancel nonessential small gatherings, and if unavoidable, make sure to wear a mask and avoid eating or singing together (which produce respiratory droplets in air).
- People with suspected symptoms are asked to cancel outings or social gatherings and instead go to a screening clinic to get tested.
□ In light of the recent spreading of COVID-19 through religious small group meetings and religious events, KCDC urged religious communities to take particular caution during the upcoming weekend, including:
○ Avoid gatherings or switch to non-face-to-face methods;
○ In the case of an unavoidable on-site event, minimise the number of people attending on site, ensure 2 meter distancing and mask wearing at all times, and use instrumental music instead of singing (which can cause respiratory droplets to move in air).
○ Small group meetings should also be refrained, as having conversations for a long period of time in crowded environment can cause transmission of infection.
COVID-19 PREVENTION MEASURES IN RELIGIOUS FACILITIES - Use non-face-to-face, contactless methods to hold events such as online gathering - Avoid face-to-face, contact gatherings - If having fever or respiratory symptoms, do not attend religious events - Disinfect and ventilate spaces before and after an event - Avoid activities that make respiratory droplets move in air (such as singing, chanting, and shouting) - Maintain a certain distance from other people (2 meters recommended, 1 meter minimum) - Follow personal hygiene protocols, including hand washing and hand disinfectant use - Avoid providing group meals |
□ To address the challenges faced by COVID-19 diagnosis kit developers, and to support research and development for diagnosis reagent in preparation for a second wave, KCDC will distribute around 1,700 SARS-CoV-2 positive respiratory samples through the National Biobank of Korea.
○ KCDC, in cooperation with Korean Society for Laboratory Medicine, obtained the samples leftover after diagnostic tests at healthcare institutions and private referral laboratories.
○ A total of 31 institutions have applied for samples at the National Biobank of Korea (12-19 June). After a review process, 18 diagnostic kit developers and 1 clinical test institution have been awarded distribution of the first batch.
