KCDC announced further findings from the analysis of genome sequence of 526 viruses detected from domestic COVID-19 confirmed cases.

During the initial stages of COVID-19 global outbreak, clades S and V were mostly found worldwide including in Asia regions including China. Most of the clades are found in each continent of the world.

* WHO-operated COVID-19 virus genetic information site GISAID classifies the virus as clades S, V, L, G, GH, GR, or other based on the type of amino acid of a certain gene.

- Recently, G, GR, and GH clades are most common in recent cases in Europe, North America, South America, and Africa regions.

In Korea, S and V types were identified prior to early April. and the GH type began to be found in Korea with the outbreaks in Yecheon (in Gyeongbuk Province) and Itaewon nightclubs (in Seoul City) and are being found in recent cases including to Daejeon door-to-door sales and Gwangju Gwangneuksa cases.

The average daily overall new confirmed cases stayed similar between the two periods (46.7 to 46.9).

- The number of local transmission cases slightly decreased, from 36.8 to 31.1 cases per day.

- During the last two weeks, there were 15.8 imported cases on average, higher than the previous two week period. All were confirmed at the border or while under self-quarantine.

Local clusters (43.5%) and imported cases (35.6%) accounted for majority of new confirmed cases during the last two weeks.

- Local clusters continue to occur in Seoul Metropolitan Region, Chungcheong regions, Gwangju City, and Daegu City around religious facilities, door-to-door sales, social gatherings, public venues, care facilities, and education facilities.

Recent major clusters

- (Religious facilities) Gwangju Gwangneuksa Temple (12) / Love Church (15) / Ilgok Central Church (16), Seoul Wangsung Church (36), Anyang Lord Glory Church (24)

- (Door-to-door sales) Gwangju Geumyang Building (25), Daejeon door-to-door sales (83), Seoul Yeoksam-dong (18)

- (Care facilities) Gwangju CCC Agape Silver Center (7) / Hanwul Nursing Home (7)

- (Public venues / social gatherings) Uijeongbu Apartments / fitness facility (27), Suwon church friends gathering (20), Gwangju Jeju Island Tourist Group (5)

- (Workplaces) Chungbuk automobile component manufacturer (13), Gangnam financial firm (7), Daejeon The Joeun Clinic (10)

- (Education facilities) Daegu acting classes (11), Daejeon Cheondong Elementary School (3)

The number of new cases whose infection source has not been identified is also increasing, indicating continued “silent transmission” in the community mostly around middle-aged and elderly population.

By age group, young adult (20s and 30s) cases are increasing and middle-aged and elderly (50s and above) cases continue to account for a high percentage (43%).

KCDC urged precaution in light of the continued local transmissions especially around religious facilities and door-to-door facilities.

Religious communities are requested to cancel large events or small group gatherings or switch them to a non-face-to-face method.

- Facilities hosting an on-site religious event should minimize the number of people attending in person, ensure 2 meter distancing and mask wearing, use instrumental music instead of choir or congregational singing, and avoid having group meals or small group gatherings.

COVID-19 PREVENTION MEASURES IN RELIGIOUS FACILITIES

- Use non-face-to-face, contactless methods to hold events such as online gathering

- Avoid activities that make respiratory droplets move in air (such as singing, chanting, and shouting)

- Disinfect and ventilate spaces before and after an event

Middle-aged and elderly people are requested to avoid direct sales seminars or promotional events.

- People who have suspected symptoms should cancel any outing or social gathering plans and visit a screening clinic to get tested.
