Updates on COVID-19 in Republic of Korea

□ As of 0:00, 17 August 2020, the total number of confirmed cases is 15,515 (including 2,651 imported cases), of which 13,917 cases have been discharged from isolation. There are 188 new local cases, 9 new imported cases, and 0 new deaths.

□ The current state* of major local clusters as of today (as of 12:00, 17 August) are as follows:
* The specific figures below may differ from the daily reported statistics (which are based on figures as of 0:00 today) or figures disclosed by local municipalities due to factors such as report timing and differences in the time period considered
○ Related to Sarang Jeil Church in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul City, 70 additional cases were confirmed from contact investigation. In total, 319 cases have been confirmed.
- 307 cases total in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi
- 12 cases in other areas
○ Related to Gold Train (Gangnam-gu, Seoul City) / Yangpyeong-gun group gathering, 2 additional cases were confirmed while under self-quarantine. In total, 58 cases have been confirmed.
○ Related to Doesaegim Church in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul City, 4 additional cases were confirmed while under self-quarantine. The new cases are 3 family members and 1 friend/acquaintance of church member(s). In total, 11 cases have been confirmed.
○ Related to Euncheon Convalescent Hospital in Gwangak-gu, Seoul City, 1 additional case was confirmed. The new case is a nurse at healthcare institution to which inpatients were transferred. In total, 10 cases have been confirmed.
○ Related to Korea IT Academy in Gangnam-gu, Seoul City, 6 additional cases were confirmed after first case was confirmed on 12 August. The additional cases are 3 colleagues and 3 family members of first case. In total, 7 cases have been confirmed.
○ Related to Okestro (a software developer company) in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul City, 6 additional cases were confirmed after first case was confirmed on 14 August. The additional cases are 5 colleagues and 1 friend/acquaintance. In total, 7 cases have been confirmed.
○ Related to Woori Jeil Church in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi Province, 5 additional cases were confirmed from testing of church members and contacts. In total, 131 cases have been confirmed.
- 126 cases total in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi
- 3 cases in other areas
○ Related to Starbucks Paju Yadang Station Branch in Paju-si, Gyeonggi Province, 13 additional cases were confirmed. In total, 42 cases have been confirmed.
○ Related to a family in Yeongje-gu, Busan City, 1 additional case was confirmed while under self-quarantine. In total, 8 cases have been confirmed.
○ Related to the Busan National Mechanical Technical High School in Haeundae-gu, Busan City, 3 additional cases were confirmed while under self-quarantine. The new cases are 2 students and 1 contact. In total, 15 cases have been confirmed.
○ Related to a nightlife entertainment venue in Sangmu Jigu, Gwangju City, 7 additional cases were confirmed. In total, 14 cases have been confirmed.
□ During the 2 last weeks, cases of local clusters accounted for 65.1% of total cases. Cases with chain of transmission under investigation account for 11.6%.
○ Epidemiological investigation of recent cases related to religious facilities found that infections from religious facilities are spreading to other locations and through various chains of transmissions such as call centers, preschools, and convalescent hospitals.
- People who are contacted by the authorities and instructed to home quarantine should get tested as soon as possible.
- People under home quarantine need to follow the quarantine guidelines. Failure to follow the guidelines may result in imprisonment of up to 1 year or a fine of up to 10 million KRW according to Article 79.3 of Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act.
○ Seoul City has been requesting the public to follow the core infection prevention order which entered into force on 15 August.
- All face-to-face events and gatherings hosted by religious facilities other than regular service/mass are prohibited.
- Religious facilities may have regular service/mass as long as they keep the following core infection prevention rules:
▴have electronic visitor logs installed and used
▴not provide food or have people dine together
▴check symptoms of visitors and restrict entry if having symptoms
▴designate infectious disease prevention manager
▴ensure everyone wears masks
▴disinfect before and after service and keep disinfection logs
▴maintain 2m distancing among facility users
□ As of 0:00, 17 August, there were 9 imported cases, of which 2 were confirmed at the point of entry, and 7 were confirmed in the community while in mandatory self-quarantine after arrival. 4 were Korean nationals and 5 foreign nationals.
○ The (presumed) location of infection acquisition of the 9 new imported cases are:
- Asia excluding China: Bangladesh 2, Kyrgyzstan 1, Indonesia 1, Kuwait 1
- Europe: Malta 1
- America: US 1
- Africa: Algeria 1, South Africa 1
□ Social Distancing level has been raised to Level 2 for Seoul City and Gyeonggi Province starting 16 August. KCDC asks residents of Seoul and Gyeonggi area to follow the Social Distancing Level 2 Guidelines.
Public Guidance for Level 2 Social Distancing ➀ Do not go to work if feeling sick - Call KCDC call center by dialing 1339 or contact local public health center or screening clinic ➁ Postpone or cancel non-essential outings, social gatherings, events, or travel - Essential travel includes getting medical care, buying necessities, or to going to work - At restaurants or cafes, order takeout rather than dining in - Home training is recommended in place of going to gyms - For social activities, utilize PC or smartphones to have online meetings - Use online shopping over physical stores ➂ If going out, wear mask and follow infection prevention guidelines - Do not visit crowded, confined, and close-contact places with poor ventilation - Wear mask indoors as well as outdoors whenever 2m distancing can’t be maintained - Maintain physical distance from other people (2m recommended, 1m minimum) - No droplet-producing activities such as shouting, singing out loud, or chanting - No physical contact with others such as handshakes or hugs |
