Updates on COVID-19 in Republic of Korea

As of 0:00, 30 August 2020, the total number of confirmed cases is 19,699 (including 2,813 imported cases), of which 14,903 cases have been discharged from isolation. There are 283 new local cases, 16 new imported cases, and 2 new death.

Major local clusters as of 12:00 today (30 August):

Related to Sarang Jeil Church in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul City, 17 additional cases were confirmed from contact investigation. In total, 1,035 cases have been confirmed.

- 965 cases total in capital area (Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi)

- 70 cases total in other areas (Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Gangwon, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Jeonbuk, Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam)

- To date, 158 confirmed cases of further transmissions from Sarang Jeil Church have been found related to 25 venues. Investigation is underway.

 

 

 

Related to August 15 Seoul rallies, 62 additional cases were confirmed from investigation. In total, 369 cases have been confirmed.

- Rally related (149), further transmissions (121), police (8), under investigation (91)

- 198 cases total in capital area (Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi)

- 171 cases total in other areas (Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, Daejeon, Ulsan, Gangwon, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam)

- To date, 118 confirmed cases of further transmissions from August 15 rallies have been found related to 10 venues. Investigation is underway.

- Among 10 venues, Seoul Green Hospital, Daegu Grace Vision Church and Agape Church related cases are found to be linked with August 15 Seoul rallies as a result of epidemiological investigation.

- From Daegu Sarang Eui Church, first case was confirmed on 28 August and 33 additional cases were confirmed from contact investigation. In total, 34 cases have been confirmed. Epidemiological investigation has revealed that the transmission has occurred through church services where many church members including index case has attended after participating in August 15 Seoul rallies.

 

Related to Great Wonders Church in Yeongdungpo-gu, Seoul City, first case was confirmed on 27 August and 16 additional cases were confirmed from contact investigation. In total, 17 cases have been confirmed. Investigation is underway.

 

Related to In Seoul Theology School in Dongjak-gu, Seoul City, first case was confirmed on 26 August and 21 additional cases were confirmed from contact investigation. In total, 22 cases have been confirmed.

 

Related to an apartment complex in Guro-gu and a livestock company in Geumcheon-gu, Seoul City, 1 additional case was confirmed from contact investigation. In total, 35 cases have been confirmed. Further investigation is underway.

 

Related to the Seohaero Church in Pyungtaek City, Gyeonggi Province, first case was confirmed on 27 August and 9 additional cases were confirmed from contact investigation. In total, 10 cases have been confirmed. Further investigation on contacts and route of transmission is underway.

 

Imported cases as of 0:00, 30 August:

16 new imported cases

- 7 were confirmed at the point of entry and 9 were confirmed in the community while in mandatory self-quarantine after arrival

- 10 Korean nationals and 6 foreign nationals

 

Infection acquisition location (presumed):

- China: 1

- Asia excluding China: Iraq 3, Philippines 2, India 2, Kazakhstan 1, Indonesia 1, Russia 1

- Americas: US 4, Mexico 1

 

Severe/critical cases and deaths:

Total 323 deaths (cumulative), among which 314 (97.2%) had underlying medical conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.

- 301 deaths(93.2%) were aged 60+

- 16 deaths(4.95%) were aged 50-59

- 4 deaths(1.2%) were aged 40-49

- 2 deaths(0.6%) were aged 30-39

 

By routes of transmission:

- 169 cases (52.3%) were transmitted from facilities or hospitals

- 31 cases (9.6%) were transmitted from Shinchunji religious group

- 22 cases (6.8%) were transmitted from local clusters

- 21 cases (6.5%) were transmitted by contacting confirmed cases

 

70 severe/critical cases as of today

- 60 (85.7%) are aged 60 or above

- 7 (10%) are aged 50-59

- 3 (4.3%) are aged 40-49

- For the last 2 weeks, severe/critical cases increased fivefold from 13 cases to 70 cases

 

Since elderly people aged 60 or above are more likely to develop severe symptoms if infected with COVID-19, KCDC advises the elderly to stay home as much as possible and wear a facemask at all times when leaving home and get tested as soon as possible if they notice any symptoms related to COVID-19 such as fever, cough, sore throat, and muscle pain.

 

KCDC released epidemiological results of clusters from nursing homes, care centers for elderly, or convalescent hospitals and advised caution.

 

For welfare centers and hospitals, in many cases transmission occurred from staff to users/patients.

- Therefore workers are advised not to visit publicly frequented places such as cafes, restaurants, bars, karaoke rooms, internet cafes, cancel or postpone travel plans or meetings, do not go to work when experiencing symptom such as fever, cough. Workers are also advised to wear a mask when working, and keep prevention guidelines such as washing hands.

- People in charge of such facilities are requested not to have any visitors, disinfect the surface regularly, ventilate frequently when air conditioning, and assist users/patients to get tested immediately when he/she is showing any symptoms such as fever or cough.

- For above facilities and hospitals in Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi area, no visitors are allowed and day/night elderly care center and cooling centers are advised to close.

 

 

 

 

KCDC asked public to comply with enhanced social distancing measures within Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi area effective from 30 August to 6 September.

 

Only takeaway and deliveries are allowed from 21:00pm to 5:00am next day for restaurants, pubs, bars, snack bars, bakeries, and non-franchised cafes. No dine-in is allowed.

- For franchised coffee shops, only takeaway and deliveries are allowed regardless of business hours. No dine-in is allowed.

- Indoor fitness centers such as indoor gym, billiard hall, screen golf facility, and badminton courts are closed for as gathering ban is applied.

- As of 0:00 31 August, only online class is allowed for academies/institutions and gathering ban is applied to private study rooms and study cafes.

 

KCDC reminds the public that transmission of COVID-19 is ongoing throughout the nation and asked for thorough compliance with infection prevention measures and participation in social distancing.


Public Guidance for Level 2 Social Distancing

Do not go to work if feeling sick

- Call KCDC call center by dialing 1339 or contact local public health center or screening clinic

Postpone or cancel non-essential outings, social gatherings, events, or travel

- Essential travel includes getting medical care, buying necessities, or to going to work

- At restaurants or cafes, order takeout rather than dining in

- Home training or outdoor exercising is recommended in place of going to gyms

- For social activities, utilize PC or smartphones to have online meetings

- Use online shopping over physical stores

If going out, wear mask and follow infection prevention guidelines

- Do not visit crowded, confined, or close-contact places with poor ventilation

- Wear mask indoors as well as outdoors whenever 2m distancing can’t be maintained

- Ensure mask covers mouth and nose completely and do not touch mask

- Keep mask on except to drink or eat

- Maintain physical distance from other people (2m recommended, 1m minimum)

- No droplet-producing activities such as shouting, singing out loud, or chanting

- No physical contact with others such as handshakes or hugs
