Mask wearing to become mandatory

November 13, 2020

In accordance with the amended Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act (Article 49, 80, etc.), violation of infection prevention measures such as mask wearing in publicly used facilities is subject to a fine since October 13. After a one-month grace period, failure to comply with mask mandate in situations where it is mandatory is subject to a fine of up to KRW 100,000 starting November 13.

Places where mask wearing is mandatory under Social Distancing Level 1 include nightlife venues, singing rooms, indoor performance venues, direct selling promotion halls, restaurants, cafes, PC cafes, wedding halls, funeral halls, hagwon, training facilities, bathhouses, movie theaters, theme parks, water parks, arcades, indoor gyms, department stores, grocery stores, public transportation, protests and assemblies, hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, nursing homes, day care facilities, religious facilities, indoor sports arenas, call centers, and fulfillment centers.

Outdoor sports arenas will be included under Level 1.5 and all indoor spaces and some outdoor activities will also be included under Level 2. Under Levels 2.5 and 3, mask wearing is mandatory in all indoor spaces as well as outdoor situations where 2m distancing cannot be maintained.

Since the measure is intended to protect people from respiratory viral infection under an infectious disease epidemic, MDFS-approved health masks/respirators (KF-94, KF-80, etc.), anti-droplet masks (KF-AD), or dental masks are recommended, although cloth masks or disposable masks that completely cover both mouth and nose are also acceptable. Mesh masks, valved masks, scarfs, clothing, food sanitation spit guard covering only the mouth, wearing masks over chin or neck, or partial masking with either nose or mouth exposed will not be accepted as masking for the purpose of infectious disease prevention.
