Pilot projects on the TB screening for the elderly in South Korea, 2018

Although the incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in Korea has declined annually by 5.7%, TB incidence in elderly individuals remains higher than that in individuals of other ages. In 2018, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) conducted a pilot tuberculosis screening project for elderly individuals aged 65 years and over, residing in two regions in Gangwon-do and two regions in Kyeongsangbuk-do. A total of 32,399 elderly individuals underwent TB screening including chest x-ray and laboratory-based tests(sputum smear, sputum culture, polymerase chain reaction). The results showed that among 32,399 subjects, 74 elderly individuals were classified as TB patients. The TB incidence rate was high among individuals who were male, elderly, living alone, contacts of TB patients, and who had history of TB and underlying diseases. Thirty-seven (50.0%) of TB patients were classified as inactive TB on the chest radiography, and 34 (91.9%) among them tested positive for sputum culture examination. In 2019, the KCDC is planned to further extend the pilot tuberculosis screening project for elderly individuals to additional two regions in Jeollanam-do and two regions in Chungcheongnam-do.
