Diagnosis and treatment of carotid stenosis

Carotid artery stenosis is a common cause of atherosclerotic ischemic stroke. The key risk factors for carotid artery stenosis are dyslipidemia, hypertension, smoking, diabetes mellitus, age, and obesity. Proper diagnosis and treatment are essential for the prevention of primary and secondary ischemic stroke. This review discussed diagnosis methods and options for management strategies and examined the increasing prevalence of carotid artery stenosis as a major arterial disease in the Korean population.
