Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate socioeconomic factors that influence self-rated health and mental health among adolescent population group in Korea. Methods: Using data of the 2015 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, a total of 68,043 boys and girls in middle and high schools were included in the present analysis. The socioeconomic position indicators were based on self-reported information from the students i.e., parental education, parental citizenship, subjective economic status, type of residence, school grade, and experience of part-time jobs. The outcome variables included self-rated health, stress recognition, feelings of depression and suicidal ideation. The measured outcome variables were also based on the self-reported information from the students. Results: Socioeconomic differences for the health inequality were found among the Korean adolescents. Among a Korean adolescents population group, socioeconomic status that included sex, family type, parental education, subjective economic status, school grade and experience of part-time jobs were commonly associated with health inequality in the self-rated health and the mental health including stress recognition, feelings of depression and suicidal ideation. Conclusion: This study suggests that policies that target high risk population in the adolescents on health inequality should be developed and provided for a healthy start in life for adolescents. Further researches are needed to explore the association of socioeconomic status of Korean adolescents with overall health including physical, mental, and subjective health. |
