Background and objective: Well-being is a matter of primary concern regardless of age or gender today. Especially, adolescence is vulnerable to mental health. Physical activity has been shown to increase subjective well-being. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between physical education classes which can be called representative physical activity of the secondary school students and subjective well-being. Methods: This study used cross-sectional data included 74,186 (male: 38,221 and female: 35,965; 96.4% response rate) middle and high school students from Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBWS, 2012). In order to investigate the relationship between physical education class frequency and subjective well-being, we performed complex sample design logistic regression to calculate Odds Ratio (OR) and 95% Confidence Interval (CI) after adjusting for school grade, academic achievement, family affluence level, self-rated physique, self-rated health, living with both parents, and violence victimization. Results: In male students, there was a significant graded dose-response relationship between physical education classes and subjective well-being (p<0.001). During the last 7 days, the OR(95% CI) for male students in once, twice, and more than thrice physical education class participation, as compared to the nonparticipation, were 1.150(1.066-1.241), 1.227(1.149-1.310), and 1.282(1.200-1.369), respectively. In the case of female students, OR values were 1.019(0.944-1.100), 1.066(0.999-1.137), and 1.146(1.068-1.230), respectively. Conclusion: We found that the more physical education class students attend, the more subjective well-being was augmented in both male and female students. These results mean that increased physical education class leads to improvement in the number of adolescents who perceive subjective well-being. Therefore, in order to increase subjective well-being of Korean adolescents, it may be necessary to encourage physical education class participation.
