KCDC urges precautions against AI infections as AI (H7N9) patients increase rapidly in China

◇ Warns against contact with poultry when traveling to high risk areas in China
◇ Travelers should fill out a health questionnaire upon arrival in Korea from China, contact a public health center or call 1339 (KCDC call center) when experiencing fever and/or respiratory symptoms within ten days after coming in contact with poultry

□ The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC, Director Jung Ki-Suck) once again urged citizens traveling to China to avoid contact with poultry and follow the infection prevention guidelines, such as washing hands, as H7N9 type* AI (avian influenza) human infection cases are increasing rapidly in China.

□ In China, AI (H7N9) human infection cases are increasing rapidly as of late. Since October 2016, a total of 429 patients have been diagnosed*, which is more than three times than those diagnosed in the last term (121).

○ Since the first occurrence of AI (H7N9) human infection in 2013, the infection became pandemic in China from October to April in the following year. Accordingly, human infection cases are expected to occur continuously for some time in the future.

□ The KCDC, through cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is sending out SMS about AI human infection prevention and precautions for citizens traveling to China* at the time of departure. In addition, people arriving in Korea from AI contaminated areas in China are monitored for fevers at the arrival gate and are asked to fill out and submit a health questionnaire.

○ The KCDC is designating contaminated areas* in China on a regular basis according to the status of AI human infection occurrence and is providing information about these areas on its website. This information is also provided in planes entering Korea from China.

○ Citizens traveling to China can receive information on areas of AI human infection occurrence in China and infection prevention guidelines at the "Disease Information Center for Overseas Travelers" located on the third floor of the departure terminal at Incheon International Airport. Travelers can plan out a healthy and safe trip by visiting the center before their departure.

□ The KCDC advises citizens to check the infectious disease information for their travel destinations on its website (http://www.kdca.go.kr, mobile website - http://m.kdca.go.kr) before departing to the countries.

○ The KCDC also asks citizens to fill out a health questionnaire by checking if the places they have visited are designated as contaminated areas and submit the questionnaire to the quarantine officers. In addition, upon arrival in Korea, those experiencing fever and/or respiratory symptoms within ten days after coming in contact with poultry in contaminated areas are to contact the competent public health center or call 1339 (KCDC call center).
