Second inflow of cholera by a traveler to the Philippines


◇ On February. 18, 2017 (Sat.) a cholera patient (female, born in 1974, Korean) entered Korea from Cebu, Philippines through Philippines Airlines (PR484)
◇ Passengers who flew in the same plane and peoplethose experiencing severe watery diarrhea and/or vomiting after a recent trip to the Philippines are advised to visit a nearby hospital

□ The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCKCDC, Director Jung Ki-sSuck) announced that a cholera patient (female, born in 1974) arrived at Incheon International Airport at 6:50 a.m. on February 18, 2017 (Sat.) fromafter a trip to Cebu, Philippines through Philippine Airlines PR484, which is the second inflow of cholera from an overseas location.

○ This patient started to display the symptoms of watery diarrhea and vomiting on February 19 (Sun.), visited a hospital on February 20 (Mon.) and received a stool culture test. On February 24 (Fri.), the test result confirmed the existence of vVibrio cholerae (V. cholerae O1 Ogawa).

○ Immediately after the test result was checked, an epidemiological survey on the patient was started by the Changwon-si Public Health Center and the Gyeongsangnam-do Provincial Office. In addition, an investigation iswas carried out to identify additional patients among those the patient hasd been in contact with during the period of her stay in Korea through disease occurrence monitoring and diagnostic examination.

□ On February 10, 2017, the Philippines was designated as a quarantine and infectious disease contamination area due to the risk of risk of cholera outbreak. Both of the two recent patients were diagnosed with cholera after a trip to Cebu, Philippines.

○ The CDCKCDC urgeds citizens to strictly follow infectious disease prevention rulesguidelines during trips to the Philippines, such as to wash hands correctlyproperly and eat safe food.

□ The CDCKCDC also adviseds passengers who usedwere on board the same plane as the cholera patient and other citizens experiencing the symptoms of severe watery diarrhea and/or vomiting after a recent trip to the Philippines to visit a nearby hospital, notifyinform the medical staff of their overseas trips to the medical staff and receive a cholera test.

○ At the same time, the CDCKCDC asked hospitals that have diagnosed and treated cholera patients to report to the competent public health centers immediately. Citizens who have inquiries about diseases including cholera are advised to contact the CDCKCDC call center (Tel.: 1339).
