KCDC publishes guideline and SOP for public health risk communication



◇ Published "Risk Communication Guideline for Public Health Emergencies" and "SOP for Risk Communication for Public Health Emergencies"
- Guideline containing principles of communication necessary in overcoming risks in public health emergencies
- SOP containing communication activities with citizens, the press, related agencies and international organizations in emergencies; communication activities described in detail with examples
- Issued English editions in order to improve competency to global standards, prepare for external evaluations abroad, and promote international cooperation

□ The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC, Director Jung Ki-Suck) announced the publication of the “Risk Communication Guideline for Public Health Emergencies“ and the “Standard Operating Procedure for Risk Communication for Public Health Emergencies" in order to assist public health authorities to handle and overcome public health emergencies upon occurrence accurately, swiftly and transparently.

□ The Guideline and SOP contain details necessary in appropriately handling and swiftly overcoming emergencies as well as for application at ordinary times.

○ The Guideline contains basic definitions of risk communication before and after the occurrence of emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) together with communication principles and management/evaluation systems.

○ The SOP describes monitoring and collection of infectious disease information in the media, development and spreading of messages for disease control and prevention, press release and briefing for swift response, online communication with the public and supply of information to and establishment/ maintenance of a reliable relationship with related domestic and international organizations (public, press, related agencies and international organizations) through a network in detail, which are to be handled and carried out by each person working in risk communication.

□ The KCDC concurrently issued English editions in order to improve Korea's risk communication competency to global standards and also to prepare for Joint External Evaluation (JEE)* on Korea's risk handling capacity by the WHO, which is scheduled for August of this year, and to promote international cooperation.

○ The KCDC announced a plan to continuously update and supplement the contents including visual materials and videos based on the first editions in order to apply the Guideline and SOP to communication planning and execution in all sectors of public health and medicine.
