First inflow of cholera by a traveler to the Philippines in 2017

□ The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC, Director Jung Ki-Suck) announced the detection of Vibrio cholerae (V. cholerae O1 Ogawa, CTX+) from a stool culture test (at 17:00 on February 20, 2017) of a passenger displaying the symptom of diarrhea that entered Incheon International Airport from Cebu, Philippines at 21:10 on February 17, 2017 (Fri.) through Air Asia Z29048. This is the first cholera infection of a Korean from an overseas trip this year (Attachment 3. Status of Cholera Occurrence in Korea and Abroad).
○ Immediately after the test result was checked, an epidemiological survey was conducted on the patient by the Chungcheongbuk-do Provincial Office and the public health center of Chungju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do where the patient resides. However, the patient departed to China*.
* The time of departure was past the isolation period of "48 hours from disappearance of the symptom.".

- Accordingly, the KCDC shared information on the patient with China's quarantine and hygiene control bureau and provided a notice to administer patient control by using a quarantine hotline established through a Korea - China - Japan consultative organization for quarantine.
○ In addition, an investigation is being carried out to identify additional patients among those the patient had been in contact with during the period of her stay in Korea through disease occurrence monitoring and diagnostic examination.
□ The KCDC advises passengers who were on board the same plane as the cholera patient and display the symptoms of severe watery diarrhea and/or vomiting to visit a nearby hospital, inform the medical staff of their overseas trip and receive a cholera test.
○ At the same time, the KCDC asked hospitals that have diagnosed and treated cholera patients to report to the competent public health centers immediately. Citizens who have inquiries about diseases including cholera are advised to contact the KCDC call center (Tel.: 1339).
