□ The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC, Director Jung Ki-Suck) announced the results of the "2017 KCDC National Awareness Survey," which was conducted for the first time since the supervisory and control functions of the national quarantine system were strengthened.
○ This survey was conducted by a professional research organization (Realmeter) in January 2017 targeting 1,070 male and female adults aged 19 and older residing across the country through telephone interviews (sampling error 95%, confidence level ±3%p).
□ By and large, the national awareness and reliability of the KCDC were found to be low.
○ In response to the question about the level of recognition of the KCDC, 55.8% and 44.2% of respondents said that they "do not know" and "know" who the KCDC is, respectively.
○ In addition, in response to the question on the reliability of the KCDC, 55.9%, 16.6% and 25.6% of the 472 respondents who said they "know" who the KCDC is gave the answers of "unreliable," "neutral" and "reliable," respectively. As such, only two out of every ten citizens responded that they trusted the KCDC.
□ As for the KCDC's risk response, six out of 10 citizens responded that the KCDC responds to risks poorly.
○ In response to the question about emergency response in relation to diseases, such as the Zika virus and cholera, 64.0% said the KCDC is "not doing well," which is approximately double the percentage of respondents who said the KCDC is "doing well" (34.0%).
□ To improve communication with citizens, the KCDC will set up a practical consultative organization for integrated PR and promote various projects including a national disease prevention campaign.
○ In addition, to improve preparedness for public health risks, the KCDC will expand the cooperative system to further strengthen risk communication networks with not only domestic medical institutions, the press and general companies, but also with the international society.
○ The KCDC will continuously conduct the survey each year to establish an objective awareness data-based communication strategy and also prepare mid- to long-term performance indicators.
