Trends in the proportions of hypertensive, prehypertensive and normotensive Korean adults aged 30 and over, 2007-2016

For the past 10 years, the prevalence of hypertensive males increased from 28.8% in 2007-2009 to 35.0% in 2016 (6.2%p increase). In 2016, the prevalence of males with hypertension or prehypertension was 65.8% (prehypertension 30.8%, hypertension 35.0%), 1.5 times higher than 43.7% of females (prehypertension 20.8%, hypertension 22.9%), indicating that 2 out of three males or 2 out of five females have either hypertension or prehypertension (Figure A).
