Since the first reported cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in 1985, the number of notified new HIV infection cases has increased to 1,191 in 2017. Among them, male accounted for 1,089 cases (91.4%). The age group 20-29 years accounted for the highest percentage of cases (33.1%), followed by 30-39 years (24.3%), and 40-49 years (17.8%). In particular, the number of HIV cases in foreigners increased and accounted for 15.3% of total cases in 2017.
In accordance with global efforts, the Korean government has focused on ensuring that people living with HIV are aware of their status early and have access to continuous and effective HIV treatment. Additionally, we are making efforts to prevent HIV infection/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome to end its epidemic.
