Prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection among first-grade high school students in Korea in 2017

The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among first-grade high school students in Korea in 2017. Data were retrieved from the results of screening for LTBI among first-grade high school students in 2017. Of the total 522,374 first-grade students from 2,360 high schools, 251,922 first-grade students (48.2%) from 2,312 high schools (98.0%) participated in the screening for LTBI in 2017. The overall prevalence of positive LTBI among first-grade high school students was 2.1%, and it significantly differs by age and area, showing 2.7% in those aged 17 years or more and 2.5% in those resided in rural areas. Among schools examined, the rates of positive LTBI showed 0.0–2.0% in 1,356 high schools (58.7%), 2.1-4.4% in 703 high schools (30.4%), 4.5-9.9% in 213 high schools (9.6%), and over 10% in 40 schools (1.3%). These findings imply that further investigation is required to identify the causes of high LTBI-positivity rates at some schools.
