The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) visited the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) on Friday, May 16, to discuss ways to collaborate on infectious disease surveillance, pandemic preparedness and response, and immunization.
In 2021, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, KDCA signed a memorandum of understanding with ECDC to address cross-border public health emergency, including public health emergency preparedness and response, infectious disease surveillance and control, risk assessment, laboratory capacity building, antimicrobial resistance, healthcare-associated infections, and immunization. Dr. Jee's visit marks the resumption of high-level policy dialogues that have been stalled during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The visit began with a meeting between the heads of the two organizations, followed by an overview of ECDC's Public Health Emergency Plan, observing ECDC daily roundtable, and an introduction to the infectious disease surveillance and immunization policies between the two organizations. The two organizations agreed to establish a joint action plan to identify and implement specific cooperation projects.

“The KDCA and ECDC have been working together as key partners in preparing for and responding to future pandemics, and we plan to further solidify our cooperation by establishing a joint action plan to share information on infectious disease surveillance and conduct joint research on vaccination effectiveness,” said Dr. Youngmee Jee. ”I am confident that this visit has increased our mutual understanding and will lead to more exchanges and cooperation in the future.”
