Abstract Objectives: We investigated the prevalence of smoking and compared characteristics of electronic cigarettes(e-cigarettes) users with characteristics of conventional cigarette smokers among Korean high school students. Methods: Data from a nationally representative self-reported data, the 2011 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (n=37,169) was obtained. The participants of the survey were high school students in grade 10th-12th(aged16-18years). The factors related to smoking behavior were categorized to analyze the data as follows: socio-demographic factors, school environment factors, economic status factors, health status factors, health behavior and risk behavior factors. Results: The prevalence of only e-cigarette use, only conventional cigarette smoking, and dual use both e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes were 1.1%(409), 11.2%(4,232) and 5.0%(1,739), respectively. According to the result, students who use only e-cigarettes were more likely to have lower schooling grade, higher family's socio-economic status, and higher subjective happiness. The risk factors of dual uses shows similar patterns with conventional cigarette smoking in many aspects. Those who use both e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes were more likely to have lower age of smoking initiation, lower perceived health status, and more risk behavior(such as sexual intercourse, drinking alcohol, and drugs). Conclusion: We suggest that these findings should be acknowledged when planning and implementing legislations for adolescents’e-cigarette use prevention. |
