ABSTRACT
Background: Korea's suicide rate is the highest in the OECD for the last 8 years starting from 2004. Despite being stable of suicidal gender gap among OECD countries, Korean women are much more likely to take their own lives. Moreover, young people are especially considered as suicide risk group. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of female students among adolescents who attempted suicide and to compare female students with male students with respect to suicidal factors.
Background: Methods: Data is based on Korean youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2011~2013) containing 9,343 Korean middle and high school students who have attempted suicide.
Results: Among sample population, girls and boys accounted for 36.5% and 63.5% respectively. Socio-demographic factors were adjusted. Results showed that compared to boys, girls who were lower in grades (high school 3rd graders reference group, high school 2nd graders: OR 1.456 95% CI: 1.174-1.806; high school 1st graders: OR 1.424 95% CI: 1.15-1.763; middle school 3rd graders: OR 1.658, 95% CI: 1.326-2.072; middle school 2nd graders: OR 1.963 95% CI: 1.57-2.454; middle school 1st graders: OR 2.255, 95% CI: 1.79-2.841), who exercised less (exercise for at least 60 minutes for more than 5 times/week reference group, 4 times/week OR 1.387 95% CI: 1.104-1.743; 3 times/week OR 1.858 95% CI: 1.47-2.347; 2 times/week OR 2.482 95% CI: 1.971-3.126; once a week OR 2.766 95% CI: 2.195-3.484; no exercise OR 4.147 95% CI: 3.361-5.116), who smoked less (everyday smokers reference group, medium smokers OR 1.415 95% CI: 1.162-1.723; light smokers OR 1.994 95% CI: 1.647-2.414), who experienced sadness (never experienced sadness reference group, have ever experienced sadness OR 1.352 95% CI: 1.19-1.536), and who experienced drinking (never experienced drinking reference group, have ever experienced drinking OR 1.193 95% CI: 1.06-1.344) tend to show more odds to attempt suicide. Also, girls who were under high stress level were more likely to attempt suicide (low stress level reference group, high stress level OR 2.084 95% CI: 1.616-2.687). Lastly, girls who had low academic performance showed more odds to attempt suicide (high grades reference group, low grades OR 1.288 95% CI: 1.123-1.477).
Conclusions: Korean female students attempted suicide much more than male students. The findings of this study may explain some critical suicidal factors regarding gender difference. Therefore, suicide prevention programs should take gender differences into account when implementing programs towards adolescents.
