Objectives : We evaluate the relationship among depressed mood, body mass index(BMI), and body weight perception(BWP) as mediators in this study, as they relate to the gender of Korean adolescents. Methods : We analyzed data based on the 2013 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey that was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 36,655 boys and 35,780 girls. After adjusting the covariates, we used multivariate logistic regression. Results : Low BMI is significantly associated with depressed mood in boys before adjusting BWP (OR 1.097, 95% CI 1.025-1.175). Boys who perceive themselves as underweight were significantly associated with depressed mood (OR 1.149, 95% CI 1.065-1.239). In girls, not only low BMI (OR 0.868, 95% CI 0.809-0.930) but also high BMI (OR 0.761, 95% CI 0.698-0.829) is significantly associated with depressed mood before adjusting BWP. Girls who perceived themselves either as underweight (OR 1.083, 95% CI 1.002-1.171), or as overweight (OR 1.069, 95% CI 1.009-1.133) were significantly associated with depressed mood. There is no effect of BWP as mediators on BMI and depressed mood. Conclusions : This study suggests that not only BMI but also BWP significantly contributes to depressed mood in adolescence. We need to pay a lot of attention to thin and skinny adolescents as well as to obese adolescents, because all adolescents, both boys and girls, who perceive themselves to be underweight are at high risk for depression. |
