○Background: In South Korea, suicide was the second leading cause of death among teenagers and the prevalence of having felt stress and sad or hopeless were higher among adolescents than adults. This study analyzed mental health behaviors using data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS, 2009). ○Methods: The KYRBS was conducted on a nationally representative sample of middle and high school students. 75,066 students in 800 sampled schools completed the anonymous self-administered web-based questionnaire. Data were weighted to provide national estimates using SAS software to account for the complex sampling design. ○Results: 43.2% (95% CI=42.6-43.9) of students had felt stress, higher among female (50.0%, 95% CI=49.1-50.8) than male (37.3%, 95% CI=36.6-38.0) students, and higher among high school (46.6%) than middle school (40.0%) students. Causes of stress were examination results (55.3%), conflict with parents (15.7%), and appearance (11.5%). During the 12 months before surveys, 37.5% of students had felt sad or hopeless (95% CI=36.9-38.1), higher among female (43.5%, 95% CI=42.8-44.3) than male (32.1%, 95% CI=31.4-32.8) students, and higher among high school (40.6%) than middle school (34.5%) students. 19.1% of students had seriously considered attempting suicide (95% CI=18.6-19.6), and 4.6% had attempted suicide (95% CI= 4.4-4.8). ○Conclusion: In South Korea, the prevalence of having felt stress and sad or hopeless increased as they get older, mainly because of study related problems among adolescents. Accordingly, school-based mental health promotion programs and community mental health center need to improve mental health for adolescents. |
