The purpose of this study was to examine the raw data of a 2008 online survey on the health of youth in a bid to find out the state of sexual behavior and sex education among secondary students. It's basically meant to raise awareness of the necessity of sex education geared toward stirring up youth's appropriate sexual behavior and right sexual values building and to determine some of the right directions for that.
The findings of the study were as follows:
28.9 percent of the students investigated had ever made sexual contact, and the rates of the boys and girls who had that experience stood at 31.2 and 28.2 percent respectively. By the grade of school, the academic high school students had made sexual contact the most, followed by the vocational high school students and the middle school students irrespective of gender. By the type of school, the boys who attended boys' schools had made more sexual contact, and the girls who attended coed schools had made more sexual contact. By grade, the students had made more sexual contact regardless of gender as they moved onto a higher grade.
5.0 percent had ever sexual relations, and the rates of the boys and girls who had that experience respectively stood at 6.6 and 3.2 percent. By the grade of school, the vocational high school students had sexual relations the most, followed by the academic high school students and middle school students regardless of gender. By the type of school, the students who attended coed schools had more sexual relations irrespective of gender. By grade, the students had more sexual relations as they moved onto a higher grade.
10.2 percent had sexual relations before their entrance into middle school, and the boys and girls who had sexual relations before entering middle school respectively accounted for 11.1 and 8.2 percent. By the grade of school, the middle school students had sexual relations the most before entrance into middle school regardless of gender. By the type of school, the boys who attended boys' schools had more sexual relations, and the girls from coed schools had more sexual relations. By grade, they had less sexual relations as they went up to a higher grade.
Out of the students with sexual experiences, 40.7 percent practiced contraception, and the boys and girls who did that respectively accounted for 41.9 and 38.1 percent. The boys who practiced contraception slightly outnumbered the girls who did. By the grade of school, the academic high school students practiced contraception the most irrespective of gender, followed by the vocational high school students and middle school students. By the type of school, the boys from boys' schools practiced contraception more than their counterparts, and the girls who attended girls' schools practiced contraception more than their counterparts. By grade, they practiced contraception more as they moved onto a higher grade.
As for the contraception methods, 69.8 percent of the students who practiced contraception used condoms, and 21.3 percent relied on improper contraception methods such as coitus interruptus and rhythm method. 5.3 percent took oral contraceptives. By the grade of school, the use of condoms was most prevailing among the vocational high school students irrespective of gender, followed by the academic high school students and middle school students. The improper contraception methods like coitus interruptus and rhythm method were most rampant among the academic high school students regardless of gender, followed by the middle schol students and vocational high school students. By the type of school, the boys who attended boys' schools made more use of condoms, and the girls from girls' schools put condoms to more use. The improper contraception methods such as coitus interruptus and rhythm method were more used by the boys who attended boys' schools, and by the girls who attended girls' schools. By grade, the high school seniors made the most use of condoms irrespective of gender, and the high school sophomores relied more on the improper contraception methods such as coitus interruptus and rhythm method.
Out of the girls with sexual experiences, 8.7 percent of the girls had ever become pregnant. By the grade of school, the rate of pregnancy experience was highest among the middle school students, followed by the academic high school students and vocational high school students. By the grade of school, the girls who attended coed schools had the most experiences to get pregnant. By grade, the middle school eighth graders had the most experiences to get pregnant.
89.1 percent of the girls who had ever become pregnant had an artificial abortion. By the grade of school, the middle school girls had that experience the most. By the type of school, the coed school students had that experience the most. By grade, the middle school seventh and ninth graders had that experience the most.
11.1 percent of the students with pregnancy experiences had ever caught a venereal disease. By the grade of school, the middle school students caught the disease the most irrespective of gender. By the type of school, the coed school students caught the disease the most regardless of gender. By grade, the eighth-grade middle school students caught the disease the most irrespective of gender. Out of the students who caught the disease, 37.7 percent had that disease cured. By the grade of school, the vocational high school students got that disease treated the most regardless of gender. By the type of school, the boys who attended coed schools got that disease treated the most, and the girls who attended girls' schools got that disease cured the most. By grade, the boys got that disease treated more as they went up to a higher grade. In the case of the girls, the high school sophomores got that disease treated the most, and the high school juniors got that disease cured the least.
65.1 percent received sex education over the past year, and the boys and girls who received sex education over the past year respectively accounted for 63.8 and 66.4 percent. The girls received more sex education than the boys. By the grade of school, the middle school students received that education the most irrespective of gender, followed by the vocational high school students and academic high school students. By the type of school, the coed school students received that education the most regardless of gender. By grade, they received less sex education as they moved onto a higher grade. Concerning the content of sex education, the sex education that they received the most was about prevention of sexual violence, followed by pregnancy and birth, contraception, ways of dating, the function and structure of the sexual organs, sexual equity, abortion, prevention of venereal disease, prostitution, masturbation, how to get rid of sexual desire and homosexuality. They received the most education about how to prevent sexual violence and the least about homosexuality regardless of the grade of school, the type of school and grade.
Regarding connections between sexual education experiences and sexual behavior, the rates of sexual contact and sexual experiences were lower in the students who received sex education than in the others who didn't. The practice of contraception was more common among the girls who received sex education than the others who didn't. Concerning the method of contraception, those who received sex education made more use of condoms and oral contraceptives than the others who didn't. In relation to the use of the improper contraception methods such as coitus interruptus and rhythm method, those who received sex education made less sue of those methods than the others who didn't regardless of gender. The rate of pregnancy experience was lower in the group that received sex education than in the other that didn't, and the rate of boys who caught a venereal disease was larger in the group with sex education experience than in the other without that experience. The rate of having an artificial abortion and the rate of venereal disease treatment were larger in the group that received sex education than in the other that didn't.
