Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between weight status and self-reported physical health, happiness, and stress in Korean adolescents. Methods: In 2009, 72,399 students from the 7th to 12th grades participated in the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBWS) project, which assessed their body mass index (BMI), physical health, happiness, and stress. The relationships between BMI and each variable were examined by a one-way ANOVA. Results: Boys and girls showed significant differences in physical health and stress (p < 0.001), and only girls showed significant differences in happiness (p < 0.001) according to the BMI standard. Accordingly, a post-hoc test showed that underweight boys and girls had poor physical health (p < 0.001), and that overweight and obese boys had poor physical health (p < 0.001) compared to normal-weight adolescents. Furthermore, underweight girls were happier (p < 0.05) and less stressed (p < 0.001); however, obese boys and overweight and obese girls were more stressed (p < 0.05) compared to normal-weight adolescents. Conclusion: In boys and girls, increasing obesity corresponded with deterioration in physical health, declining levels of happiness, and increased stress. Thus, preventing obesity can be an important factor in improving mental health outcomes in Korean adolescents. |
