주요내용

Despite the numerous health benefits of physical activity (PA), considerable evidence suggests that the children and adolescents in most developed countries are not engaging in sufficient level of PA for health benefit. Several studies in Western countries found that physical activity level declines across adolescence along with pubertal development. However, corresponding evidence among Korean adolescents is relatively lacking compared to Western counterparts. Therefore, the current study examined the level of PA, sedentary time, and the association with pubertal development among Korean adolescents aged between 12 and 18 years old (grade 7 to 12) using the 2010 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBWS).
Among 73,238 participants (female 47.6%), total-, moderate-, and vigorous-PA levels decreased as age increased in both sexes (P < .001). Time spent in sedentary behaviours also showed significant differences by age (P < .001), the most sedentary group was grade 9 during weekdays and grade 10 during weekends. Significant gender differences were also found in total-, moderate-, and vigorous-PA levels, and sedentary time during weekdays and weekends (P < .001)—males were more physically active than females across all age groups. To investigate if age differences in physical activity and sedentary time were accounted by different timing of puberty, the current study aligned the group by biological age using the year of menarche (first menstruation) for girls and semenarche (first ejaculatory experience) for boys. Significant differences were found in total-, moderate-, and vigorous-PA, and sedentary time during weekdays and weekends (P < .001) among maturity-determined groups in both sexes. Interestingly, both physical activity and sedentary time were higher in early maturer compare to on-time and late maturer regardless of sex, which is inconsistent with the results of Canadian, American, and British adolescents. Maybe it is important to further investigate physical activity level and sedentary time among Korean adolescents on the basis of biocultural perspective, not only accounts for biological and psychological aspects but for cultural and environmental aspects unique to the context of South Korea.
