주요내용

This research studied physical education of Korean teenagers and the relation between mental health and academic achievement. Total 72,399 teenagers were subjected to the 2009 teenager online health research. Mental health variables (stress, depression experience, suicide consideration), demographic variables, workout and physical activity variables, and obesity variables are measured. First, girls are more likely to have negative mind such as stress, depression, and suicide than boys. Second, in relation between obesity and mental health, girls have more stress when they are obese and boys have more depression when they are overweight/obese. Also, girls have less depression when they are underweight.
In suicide consideration, girls are more likely to think suicide when they are underweight and less likely to think suicide when they are overweight. In relation with academic achievement, students are more likely to show poor performance when they are underweight/obese and they are less likely to maintain good perfonnance when they are overweight. Third, in relation with physical education, teenagers have less stress, depression, and suicide consideration when they have more physical education. They also show good perfonnance in academic studies when they have more physical education. Fourth, teenagers have less stress and depression when they are physically active and only girls have less consideration of suicide when they are physically active. Teenagers are more likely to show good perfonnance in academic achievement when they are physically active. Everyday physical activity, however, has negative influence on girls. In conclusion, more physical education(60 minutes) has positive influence on mental health and academic studies of teenagers while obesity has negative influence on them. Therefore, more extended physical education in school is necessary in order to improve teenager mental health and academic achievement.
