National Institute of Health Korea Vaccine Resarch Center

Greetings

Greetings

"
Hello.
This is Gi-eun Rhie, the Director of the Center for Vaccine Research at the Korea National Institute of Health.

VACCINE

Welcome to the webpage of the Center for Vaccine Research,
which is leading the research and development of vaccines in Korea.

Beginning in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic, posed a serious threat to public health worldwide, causing

unprecedented economic and social losses.

The experience gained from this pandemic situation and the advent of new technologies in the form of

mRNA vaccines re-emphasized the importance of rapid vaccine development and production capacity.

Since its launch in September 2020, The Center for Vaccine Research at the National Institute of

Infectious Diseases serves as the control tower for national vaccine research and development by

performing a wide range of tasks, which include setting national vaccine development strategies,

securing core technologies for next-generation vaccines through basic research, and developing

public vaccines.

Additionally, the center has established a support system for the entire vaccine development process,

with the provision of a biosafety level 3 facility (BL3), animal biosafety facilities (ABL2/ABL3), non-clinical

and clinical trial support networks, and pathogen resources, in order to aid the private sector and facilitate

vaccine practicalization.

Through the collaborative efforts of domestic, international, public, private, academic, and research

institutions, bolstered by the above mentioned support system, Korea was able to produce

its first COVID-19 vaccine.

In the future, the Center for Vaccine Research will endeavor to become a leading institution for national

vaccine research and development, ensuring Korea's growth as a vaccine powerhouse.
