Project Purpose
- To understand the national health and nutritional status in accordance with the National Health Promotion Act (Article 16)
- Investigation of health behaviors such as smoking, drinking, and physical activity, the prevalence of major chronic diseases such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, and the level of nutritional intake
- To calculate indicators for monitoring the effectiveness of health promotion and chronic disease prevention and management policies
- To calculate target indicators for chronic diseases and healthy lifestyle practices for the National Health Promotion Plan, and to provide internationally comparable health indicators required by international organizations such as the WHO

- (’98) Introduction of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
※ The 1st to 3rd KNHANES (1998, 2001, 2005) were short-term surveys conducted every 3 years. - (’07) Improvement of a system of year-round annual surveys, statistics production, and operation by a team of professional surveyors
- (’08) Introduction of mobile examination vehicles and implementation of joint surveys in cooperation with professional academic societies
- (’20) Transfer of survey implementation tasks to Regional Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (5 centers) following the establishment of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (September)
- (’23) Revision of the "National Health Promotion Act" and its subordinate statutes, and introduction of an online survey (self-administered health questionnaire)
- (’25)Introduction of a follow-up survey based on the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
Survey Content
- (Target) Annually, approximately 10,000 household members aged 1 and older from 4,800 households in 192 survey districts
- (Method) Interviews and health examinations by a team of professional surveyors, conducted year-round
- (Items) Approximately 400 items including chronic diseases, health behaviors (smoking, drinking, etc.), and nutritional intake

Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey-based Follow-up Survey, KNHANES-F (follow-up)
- (Background) Implementation of a follow-up survey to identify the causes of chronic disease onset and progression by periodically collecting information on changes in health behaviors, health status, etc.
- (Target) KNHANES participants aged 10–59 who have consented to participate in the follow-up survey
- (Survey Cycle) A baseline survey is conducted in the year of consent (1 time), followed by annual follow-up surveys (twice a year for 10+ years).
